YOUNG MARINES CLASS 34 GRADUATES

Bossier Sheriff's Young Marines graduated 22 yesterday. Class 34 had its graduation exercise at the Bossier Sheriff's Substation, 2510 Viking Drive, Bossier City.

The honor graduate was Colin Wright. The Senior Fitness Award went to Amelia Jones. The Floyd L. Baxter Award was presented to Shane Edmonds, by retired U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Mike Thornton. Charles Quinnett won the Motivation Award.

The Junior Fitness Award went to Donell Banks. The Young Marines Molly Marine award went to two female Young Marines, Koryn Quinnett and Kiaira Lockhart.

The guest speaker was Col. Roy P. Fatur, Chief of Staff, Eighth Air Force, Barksdale Air Force Base. Col. Fatur is a 1991 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, and received distinguished graduate recognition. He earned a rating of Senior Navigator and has more than 2,000 flight hours. He has flown the B-1, E-8, T-43, and T-37 aircraft. Col. Fatur has earned numerous awards and decorations during his military career.

The graduating recruits completed a three-week indoctrination and training schedule, including leadership skills, physical training, teamwork, discipline and confidence-building skills. The program instills the Marine Corps values of honor, courage and commitment and promotes a healthy drug-free lifestyle.

The Young Marines program is a national program founded in 1958 and is the official youth program of the United States Marine Corps. More than 1,200 young men and women have graduated from the Bossier Sheriff's Young Marines program since its inception here in 2002.

The Bossier Sheriff's Young Marines is sponsored and administered by Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington and is commanded by Instructor Lavaro Ramey, a retired first sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps.
